According to testing, the main content of ¦Â-glucan in Tibetan barley is 6.57%, with the highest of 8.6%, which is higher than any other places outside Tibet and is 50 times of the main content of wheat. Research has proven that ¦Â-glucan in barley has three medicinal and healthcare functions: 1. prevention of colon cancer by reducing contact of intestinal mucous membrane with cancerogenous substance or by directly inhibiting cancerogenous microbe; 2. prevention of Cardiovascular Disease by lowering blood fat and cholesterin; 3. prevention of diabetes by controlling the level of blood sugar. According to the record Omissions from the Grand Materia Medica, barley, if used as medicine, tastes salty with cool and mildly medicinal effect, mainly for descending Qi , strengthening vitality, removing dampness, inducing diaphoriesis and arresting diarrhea.
